HGH therapy is most effective when the human growth hormone is taken via injections. While this sounds intimidating at first, millions of people already self-inject themselves daily for various medical reasons without experiencing issues.
Besides, injecting HGH has significant benefits such as a slow and gradual release in the blood similar to natural growth hormone production. You can precisely control the dosage and its absorption is not affected by your diet or other lifestyle factors.
Overall, the procedure is simple and our experienced physicians will help you to quickly learn how to perform it pain-free at home.
Keep on reading to find out more about various HGH products and how you can prepare and take them safely and effectively.
How to Inject HGH
Mimicking the body’s natural growth hormone secretion is important for the optimal effect of HGH therapy. GH levels peak during the night when you don’t eat food and your insulin is at its lowest.
Because of this fact, it would be ideal to take your GH shot daily as a part of your bedtime routine. This idea is backed up by scientific evidence, which also suggests the best time to take HGH is in the late evening, preferably an hour before going to bed.
There are two main ways to dose the products – either per kilogram of your bodyweight or with a starting dosage. The starting minimum dosage is 0.2 mg/day, it can be increased by an additional 0.1 to 0.2 mg/day every 1 or 2 months under the control of your doctor. Dosing per kilogram is contraindicated for people with obesity since it might lead to excessive dosage and side effects.
Your physician will determine the optimal dose depending on your body composition, symptoms, and specific blood tests
However, the exact method of injection and the initial dose can vary between HGH products. The most commonly used are Norditropin, Saizen, Humatrope, Genotropin, and Sermorelin.
The starting dose of Norditropin shouldn’t be higher than 0.004 mg/kg per day and taken subcutaneously. The dosage can be increased every 6 weeks up to 0.016 mg/kg per day. Norditropin comes in either powdered form which requires reconstitution or preloaded in the Norditropin FlexPro Pen which does not require mixing. If you are using Norditropin powder then reconstitute each 5 mg vial with 1.5 mL of bacteriostatic water.
The initial dose of Humatrope must be lower than 0.006 mg/kg and the maximum tolerated dose is 0.0125 mg/kg per day. A vial of Humatrope contains 5mg which should be reconstituted with 1.5 to 5 mL of diluent. Make sure to use only the supplied diluent syringes. Humatrope can be injected either subcutaneously or intramuscularly.
When first starting the therapy, Genotropin can be taken 6 or 7 times per week, with a total dose of up to 0.04 mg/kg per week subcutaneously. Then the dose can be increased at 4 to 8-week intervals if needed. The safe maximum is 0.08 mg/kg per week. Genotropin comes in a pen or a mixer with either a 5 mg cartridge which is marked with a green tip or a 12 mg cartridge marked with a purple tip. An additional rear cartridge contains the diluent. Alternatively, Genotropin Miniquicks are also available which contain a single dose from 0.2 mg to 2 mg.
Saizen can be initially taken at 0.005 mg/kg per day and then it can be increased every 4 weeks. The maximum safe daily dosage is 0.01 mg/kg which can be injected either subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Saizen comes in two different sizes – 5 mg and 8.8 mg. Each of them can be mixed with 2 to 3 mL of bacteriostatic water for injection.
Sermorelin therapy must start with a dosage below 0.003mg/kg taken subcutaneously. It comes in 3 different strengths – either 3 mg, 9 mg, or 15 mg vials which must be reconstituted with 3 to 9 ml of diluent respectively before use.
Where to Inject HGH for Best Results
GH can be injected either subcutaneously or intramuscularly, but subcutaneous administration is widely preferred for several reasons. According to the research, subcutaneous injections lead to a release of growth hormone in the blood that is much closer to the normal daily changes.
Besides, subcutaneous injections safety is proven with scientific evidence and it’s highly preferred by patients since it’s much easier to apply at home.
On the other hand, absorption after intramuscular injection is far too short to result in a physiological curve in HGH levels. Sites for intramuscular injections are the upper arm and the thighs.
Regular places for subcutaneous injections include the abdominal area, upper arm, upper hip, and thighs. But the best place to inject HGH subcutaneously is in the abdominal area since evidence has suggested it leads to higher hormone levels in the blood.
Despite this, HGH injection sites should be rotated frequently to prevent lipoatrophy in the area. This means localized loss of fat tissue, which is a common side effect of repeated use of subcutaneous injections (such as insulin, HGH, etc.) on the same site.
Switching your growth hormone injection sites allows the tissues to recover properly. Furthermore, it makes the injections more effective and completely painless.
How to Mix and Store HGH
HGH products come in either prefilled or powder form. You have to mix the latter with a diluent and reconstitute it into a solution before use.
The diluent options include either sterile or bacteriostatic water. Bacteriostatic water is called such because it contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative. It significantly prolongs the life of the HGH product after mixing.
If you reconstitute HGH with sterile water instead, you can use it within 24 hours if refrigerated and then you must discard the unused portion
In comparison, Norditropin FlexPro Pen comes preloaded with a diluent and it doesn’t require mixing. You can store it 21 days at room temperature under 25°C (77°F) or 28 days in a refrigerator at 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F).
Subcutaneous HGH injections are performed using the tiniest needles available. They are extremely thin and as short as a quarter of an inch. Store the injections without any needles attached.
Before reconstitution, Humatrope cartridges should be stored in a refrigerator at 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F).
Saizen, on the other hand, can be stored at room temperature before mixing.
Avoid freezing the products before or after reconstitution
After reconstitution, the HGH solution is extremely sensitive. Always refrigerate it properly, avoid freezing and protect it against direct light.
Here is an easy step-by-step guide for safe and easy mixing and injecting HGH at home:
- Let the vials and pen cartridges get to room temperature before mixing HGH. Do not leave them in direct light or a heat source.
- Disinfect the stoppers of both vials with an alcohol wipe or any antiseptic solution before use to prevent bacterial contamination and eliminate the risk for infections.
- When withdrawing the diluent and mixing the contents of the vials you should use a bigger, longer sterile needle. You should inject 1 ml of air into the vial with the diluent to make the withdrawal easier.
- When injecting the liquid inside the vial for reconstitution, the needle should be directed at its wall.
- To dissolve properly, it is important to gently tap or swirl the vial. Never Shake It! Shaking or forceful tapping can damage the protein structure of HGH and render it ineffective. Avoid taping the syringe when removing the air before an injection.
- For both prefilled and reconstituted solutions make sure to check if the liquid is clear, turbid or if there are any particles. If the solution is cloudy, it is not suitable for injection and should be discarded.
- Before injecting, replace the needle, disinfect the skin spot, and squeeze your skin with the opposite hand. Make sure to pinch about an inch of skin and then quickly stick the needle at a 45° angle. Do not massage the injection spot and never reuse your injection needles.
How to Mix HGH with Bacteriostatic Water
Bacteriostatic Water for injections is usually supplied in a multiple-dose 30 mL plastic vial. It can last up to 28 days thanks to the 0.9% content of benzyl alcohol which acts as a preservative.
Benzyl alcohol has undergone multiple clinical trials and according to them, it’s completely safe when used in such small quantities. Hypersensitivity is also rare.
Thus, vials reconstituted with bac water are stable for 14 – 28 days when kept in a refrigerator, 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F). The exact period will be specified on the product by the manufacturer.
Due to the protein nature of growth hormone, the most effective way to administer it in your body is via injection. Besides, this method allows for HGH release to imitate the natural synthesis of this essential hormone.
Our experienced doctors and nurses will show you the steps of self-injecting HGH subcutaneously and explain in detail everything you need to know about this therapy. There is no reason to be intimidated because it is a simple and painless procedure you can perform daily at home.
